Finding encouragement, support, and guidance in the Civil Service

I am a Government Communication Service (GCS) apprentice in the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) working in internal communications.

When I applied to the GCS Apprenticeship programme, I had just graduated from university with a history degree, and wasn’t sure which career path I wanted to take. I knew I wanted a role which positively impacted society and used the skills I’d learnt, such as research and creative writing. So, when I saw this apprenticeship on Civil Service Jobs, I jumped at the chance to apply. I saw the apprenticeship as a great opportunity to keep learning, whilst earning money at the same time.

I am so glad I applied, because I really do enjoy my job. Every day there’s something new, and I’m nice and busy whilst being thoroughly supported by my team.

I think the apprenticeship is great for those at the beginning of their career. I found that it gives you more structure than university, and so much more encouragement, support and guidance.

I would also encourage people outside of London to apply. I work in Salford, Greater Manchester and feel very much a part of the whole team. In November 2024, colleagues from the Places for Growth programme went on an away day to the Edinburgh office, and it was a lovely way to meet people and discuss how we found working in the regions.

My best tip is to be as open to learning as possible! I’ve found that I have been encouraged to get experience in as many teams as I like, and have been given the opportunity to take on tasks which benefit my progression. In my first few weeks, I helped to organise a staff event which included 1,000 colleagues in an external venue alongside staff joining online, hosted by our Secretary of State. It was an interesting insight into event management, and a brilliant way to start my apprenticeship.

You never feel like you’re working alone in the apprenticeship as I found that my whole cohort is happy to help and share experiences, even though we are in different departments. Our apprenticeship seminars are a really nice way to meet other apprentices and begin a network across the Civil Service. After all, we’re in the same boat together!
