Our Interns share their experiences of being part of the GCS Internship 2017

The Insight day was a great opportunity to discover the breadth of communications related jobs that are available in the Government Communication Service. It really amazed me just how varied communications jobs can be and what projects you can get involved in. There’s a whole range of jobs and challenges out there, from internal communications and strategic engagement to media and digital campaigns. That’s not to mention the wide range of government departments you could also be working in. If you’re curious about the careers then the internship is a great opportunity to explore the various roles and the insight day was a great introduction to discover these opportunities.”

“As an intern at the Office for National Statistics (ONS),  I’ve taken part in a photo challenges within the Media Relations department (so far I’ve won twice). This led to an opportunity to photograph the First Minister of Wales’ visit to the new Data Science campus (see photo below). I have very much enjoyed enhancing my photography skills and am proud that my photographs have featured in the ONS National Statistical blog and on both ONS and UK Statistics Authority (UKSA) social media.”

Gemma Conlin, intern at ONS

“The emergency communications workshop was an exercise held to give GCS interns a taste of what it is like to be at the heart of government communications in an imagined scenario. We were given an incident to work through and, acting as a given government department, developed a response plan that we then presented at a cross-departmental meeting.  We were also involved in a mock press conference where we explained the decisions we’d made with regards to the scenario to  ‘journalists’. Overall the workshop gave me a fantastic insight into a day in the life of a government communicator and how to manage making difficult decisions in a fast-paced environment- I’ll be taking the skills I learnt in this workshop back to my workplace.”
