A unique opportunity

The Government Communication Service (GCS) internship offers a unique opportunity to develop your communication skills, with the chance to work across a wide range of communications disciplines, delivering cutting edge work for the UK government.

Ellie Clarke, from the GCS Early Talent team said:

“The GCS Internship is a key priority of the GCS Diversity and Inclusion strategy, and provides university level students from diverse backgrounds with an insight into the GCS. We’re excited to recruit for the 2021 GCS Internship scheme, which is in its sixth year. Last year, 54 applicants secured an internship, and they were placed across 25 government departments and Arms-Length Bodies (ALB’s).

We wish all applicants the best of luck and look forward to welcoming this year’s cohort.”

Placements are based around the UK. Interns are placed within a government department, ALB or agency and will have the opportunity to work on some of the biggest public service communications currently being delivered. The internship is paid and lasts between 6 and 12 weeks.

Emma Latham, has secured a role as an Internal Communications Officer at Cabinet Office after her experience as a previous intern in Summer 2020. Emma said:

“I really enjoyed my GCS internship. I was placed in Cabinet Office Communications and was on rotation, meaning that I was able to gain insight into a variety of comms that happen in the heart of government. The skills, knowledge and network I acquired as a result of my internship were the foundation of my Civil Service career.”

Interns are placed within a government department, ALB or agency and will have the opportunity to work on some of the biggest public service communications currently being delivered. The internship is paid and lasts between 6 and 12 weeks.

Interns will also have access to a range of learning and development opportunities through the GCS Academy, and will be able to attend virtual Comms Exchanges, career workshops and other networking events.
