Are you considering a career in communications? The Government Communication Service (GCS) internship offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills and the chance to work on some of the biggest communications challenges and issues of the day
When you join the GCS, you will quickly find that no two days – or hours – are ever the same. GCS members are a proactive and innovative community of diverse communications professionals delivering world class communications programmes that support the Prime Minister and Government priorities across a huge range of issues.
Lasting six to twelve weeks, the GCS Internship provides the opportunity to work in a range of communications disciplines (media and campaigns, strategic communications, strategic engagement and internal communications), delivering cutting edge work for UK Government. You could find yourself working on national media campaigns; creating innovative content for social media; working in a busy media office; a major staff engagement programme or with Ministers and senior officials.
The GCS are looking for ambitious and passionate students in their final or penultimate year of university, or students who have completed a degree equivalent qualification, who are interested in finding out what it’s like to work in the fast-paced environment of government communications.
The internship includes activities and opportunities which will provide you an insight to working in government communications. You will have access to communications training, led by communications professionals, which will allow you to refine and develop skills in areas you are interested in. Other opportunities include tours of Parliament, networking with senior officials and mentor opportunities across government.
“I’ve done it all – from media monitoring of government campaigns and news stories, filming interviews around London, the East and South East of England, to social media listening during the appointment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet – it’s safe to say that I’ve been part of history.”
Lena Ofosu-Apeasah, GCS Intern
