There’s a lot to cover and as some areas may not be relevant to you, you should tailor these to fit your needs and experience. Above all, you should be made to feel welcome and equipped to be effective in your role immediately and in the long term. Use the areas below as topics for discussion with your manager and explore this website as it’s full of useful information and guidance.

The list below should form part of your local induction. Within the first two weeks of starting a new role you should aim to:



Within the first three months


  • Agree objectives with your Line Manager
  • Understand the departmental performance process
  • Discuss development needs with your line manager
  • Book a place on the Aspire Introduction to Government Communications
  • Meet with your Director of Communications (DoC)/senior leader
  • Be matched with a buddy (if appropriate)
