GCS Apprenticeship and Internship 2020

Internship Scheme

The award-winning GCS internship scheme is a UK wide paid internship, aimed at students from diverse backgrounds at university level or completing a degree equivalent qualification. Lasting 6-12 weeks over the summer period, interns are paid by the host department and contracts allow for extensions to the initial placement.

Previous interns have been engaged in a variety of exciting roles including internal and external communications, supporting domestic and international campaigns, supporting visits and events, digital content creation and working in press offices. Many have gone on to have careers in the GCS, with 36% of 2019 graduate interns securing communication roles.

Alex Aiken, Executive Director of Government Communications explains the benefit of hosting an intern:

I’m really proud of our GCS interns. We have had talented individuals working across the GCS this summer bringing fresh ideas, enthusiasm and hard work to their projects. I look forward to seeing more great work from them in the future.

Alex Aiken, Executive Director of Government Communications

All departments, agencies and ALBs can submit a request to host a GCS intern. This should be coordinated between Development Advisers and HR teams for each organisation.
