Welcome Letter from the Head of Profession
Welcome to the GCS!
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to the Government Communication Service (GCS), the professional body for government communicators.
We’re your partner throughout your career in the communications profession. As a GCS member, you will achieve the highest professional standards, supporting your learning and development, and connecting you to a community of over 7000 communicators across government organisations across the UK. Being part of this profession gives you access to this diverse community of skilled individuals and gives them access to you.
We are a profession driven by purpose and pride. People work in government communications because what we do matters. We explain the objectives and policies of the government of the day. We provide clarity and reassurance to the public at times of crisis. We support businesses to grow. We protect our environment. We help those in need to access support.
We’re here to help you develop and add your talents to the vital work the Government Communications Service undertakes across the UK and around the world.
I urge you to spend your first few weeks learning as much as you can about everything that is available to you as a GCS member. GCS Connect – our online place to find colleagues and helpful resources – is your place to do this.
Please explore our new starter pages on GCS Connect to find out how we support you and to access the list of things “to do” in your first days and weeks. These pages will guide you through how we support you as well as the expectations and requirements of new GCS members.
In the “to do” list, you will see an opportunity to sign up to our next induction event – an early opportunity to meet the GCS central team and to grow your network with other communicators. I hope to see you there.
We’re excited to welcome you to our community, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.
Simon Baugh
