We are committed to ensuring GCS is a destination of choice for communications professionals. As part of the GCS strategy commitments we are currently reviewing all our talent programmes to enable us to develop a talent attraction strategy that highlights the unique opportunities available in GCS.
Six programmes
The Government Communication Service (GCS) delivers communications through our high-performing, diverse and skilled people.
The GCS runs 6 talent programmes ranging from internships and apprenticeships to our senior programmes Inspire, and the Power of Choice. You can find out more about all of our programmes in our brochure:
Early Talent Schemes
Launch your career with our early talent schemes. Our entry-level programmes will give you the skills and experience to begin a fantastic career in communications, for those stepping into work for the first time or those looking for a career change.
Apprenticeships
The GCS Apprenticeship is an alternative route to learning, providing a brilliant opportunity for school leavers, career changers and those without a degree to learn and qualify for a Level 4 PR and Communication standard while they work.
Internships
The GCS Internship is a 6 to 12 week paid communications work experience placement. The award-winning scheme is the first profession-led diversity programme across government and a key initiative in our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
Fast Stream
The GCS Fast Stream was launched in 2015 to recruit and develop the profession’s next generation of leaders. It is a 3-4 year leadership programme to grow future leaders in the profession.
Accelerated Development Programmes
Aimed at high potential government communications, our accelerated development programmes are key to raising our standards, developing inspiring leadership, and ensuring we have diversity in our senior leadership, reflecting the society we serve.
Impact
Impact is an internal 12-month programme to support high-potential government communication professionals, building excellence in leadership and communication skills.
Inspire
Designed to accelerate the leadership development of our high-potential senior communication professionals, Inspire is an internal, intensive blended development programme running over 15 months, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Communication Leadership.
Power of Choice
The Power of Choice programme aims to accelerate and retain our senior, high-potential, underrepresented talent and increase the diversity of our senior leaders across the GCS. The programme equips participants to drive their personal and professional success, creating practical steps to become future leaders of the GCS.
Civil Service talent schemes
In addition to the communications talent schemes, the Civil Service runs a variety of cross-government talent programmes, and other development opportunities, that you can participate in to advance your career.
