Communications Evaluation is an e-learning course which will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills for you to achieve Foundation level capability for evaluating communication activity.  It includes a case study with questions to illustrate the learning and culminates in a short test. As a result of completing this learning, you will understand the need for clear objectives for effective evaluation, when and how to plan your evaluation, be familiar with the metrics to collect, be aware of some analysis techniques and to consider the appropriate method of reporting.

This course takes less than an hour to complete and is only accessible via Civil Service Learning (CSL). Please note you must have flash installed on your computer/tablet.

You must complete this e-learning module in advance of attending the GCS Evaluation for Practitioners training course.

Communication Evaluation for Practitioners

This one day course is for government communicators who wish to build their understanding of best practice evaluation techniques. Progressing beyond foundation level, this course focuses on how to measure the effectiveness of communications activity and on understanding how this contributes to the broader evaluation framework within their team or department.  The course covers the competencies for Practitioner level evaluation of communication activity, based on the GCS best practice approach.

Evaluation Surgeries

The GCS Evaluation and Insight team host monthly face to face evaluation surgeries for members of GCS who require advice or guidance on evaluating their communication activity.

Evaluation surgeries can cover issues such as:

  • Creating an evaluation or communications journey map.
  • Completing the evaluation section of a GCS Professional Assurance template.
  • Identifying relevant comms metrics, potential data, sources of metrics, data analysis and reporting.
  • Creating comms performance dashboards.
  • Addressing market research needs (e.g. quantitative/qualitative research, questionnaire development, etc.).
  • Exploring alternative low cost/no cost sources and techniques for gathering evidence.
  • Evaluating activity with no budget and providing assistance with budget setting and insight generation.

Performance Hub clinics

These are a series of strategic management surgeries run by the GCS Insight and Evaluation team with Directors of Communications and their senior leadership teams to develop SMART communications objectives and KPIs aligned to their organisation’s business priorities. The output from this exercise is used to create a communication performance framework and dashboard for tracking overall performance against business objectives, prioritising value add activities, and delivering business planning improvement through the optimal use of available resource.
